Policy: Breaks
Break Policy
At HomeCare Family, we understand the importance of rest, but we also prioritize the safety and well-being of our clients. Our break policy is designed to ensure caregivers can recharge while still providing attentive, high-quality care.
Paid Breaks
- HomeCare Family does not offer scheduled or paid breaks during shifts.
- Because caregiving is a one-on-one role without coverage, leaving the client unattended — even briefly — is not permitted.
When a Break Is Allowed
You may take a short personal break only if:
- All assigned care tasks are completed.
- The client is safe, settled, and does not need assistance.
- You remain on site and available if the client needs anything.
- Your break does not disrupt the client’s routine, comfort, or safety.
Examples of acceptable break situations:
- The client is napping or resting and all tasks are completed.
- You’ve completed personal care and meal support, and the client is watching TV comfortably.
Phone Use During Breaks
- You may use your phone to read, check social media, or message during your break — but:
- Do not use your phone in view of the client or family.
- Never allow phone use to interfere with client care.
Leaving the Client Unattended
- You must never leave the client’s home during a shift without prior approval from your supervisor.
- If you need to step outside briefly (e.g., to your car), notify your supervisor and ensure the client is safe and not at risk.
